We, the members of Eugene DSA, proclaim our support for the goals and actions of Occupy ICE PDX. This direct action to blockade ICE’s prison in Portland highlights the contradiction that the City of Portland and the State of Oregon claim to support undocumented immigrants, while they allow ICE to conduct human rights abuses within their jurisdictions.

The inhumane policies that lead to criminalization and dehumanization of people who come to this country seeking respite from the effects of U.S. foreign policy abroad must end immediately. ICE must be completely abolished, along with CBP. Especially as climate change threatens to displace millions, even billions of people, all countries of the global north must radically rethink our approach to human migration, or we will be complicit in genocide.

We call on Mayor Lucy Vinis and the Eugene city council to go beyond non-cooperation with ICE and to offer real protections for immigrants against deportation and labor abuses. We call on Mayor Christine Lundberg and the Springfield city council to end their contract allowing ICE to use the Springfield City Jail. And we call on Mayor Ted Wheeler and the Portland city council to heed Portland DSA’s list of demands.

We stand in solidarity with all people who ICE has thrown into cages or deported, with the families they have ripped apart, and with the children they have tortured by kidnapping them and withholding comfort from them. We will continue to bring supplies and comrades to the camp outside the Portland ICE facility to support the brave people standing up to ICE.

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part. You can’t even passively take part! And you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop!
