We are the Eugene-Springfield chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America

What we believe

The Eugene-Springfield Democratic Socialists of America works to transition our communities away from capitalism and towards a truly democratic and socialist society that works for everyone. Rooted in this work is our belief in a humane social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning, equitable distribution, gender and racial equality, and non-oppressive relationships.

We are democratic socialists because the economic system of capitalism has failed and continues to fail to meet our needs. Capitalism only caters to the interests of the wealthy and powerful, prioritizing profit above all else. It is the force behind the policies, customs, and ways of thinking that bring discrimination, inequality, and violence against people based on their income, race, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, age, housing status, education, citizenship, and health. Capitalism’s blind drive for profit is also what has led the world to its current climate emergency.

As democratic socialists, we believe socialism can deliver a more democratic and just society that serves the needs and interests of all people. That is a society where we no longer live paycheck to paycheck, where public policies and customs allow us to reach our fullest potential, and where we can solve our community’s and our world’s most pressing issues with creativity, intelligence, and empathy.

How we take action

The Eugene-Springfield DSA is a registered 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that works to improve conditions on the ground for working-class people in the greater Eugene-Springfield area and throughout Lane County. We do this by supporting bold ideas that aren’t afraid to expand our window of political possibilities. Whether it’s canvassing for state legislation or joining community partners to fight for greener climate policy, our organization focuses on real, positive solutions.
